Women’s Health

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history of addressing women’s health and in particular treating gynaecological and fertility issues, from regulating the menstrual cycle to alleviating symptoms.

The broad heading of women’s health encompasses a wide variety of conditions. These include, but not limited to, Premenstrual Tension (PMT), period pains, irregular periods and menopause.

Using acupuncture, lifestyle advice, and herbal formulas, TCM may assist every stage of a woman’s life through reproductive years and beyond. Acupuncture has been proven, through controlled trials, to be an effective treatment for period pain. In Western medicine, PMT is usually treated using hormone-based medication, which can sometimes come with side effects.

TCM addresses irregular, heavy, light and no period. An acupuncturist and/or Doctor of Chinese Herbal Medicine can assist in relieving accompanying signs or symptoms such as period pain, low back pain, headache, clots, discharge, emotional imbalance, or a combination of any of these.

Fertility

Acupuncture is currently used alongside IVF to help increase chances of conception, maintenance of a viable pregnancy and successful delivery.

In TCM acupuncture can assist in regulating hormones, encouraging ovulation, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and calming the central nervous system by reducing stress.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a very challenging time for expectant mums. Strong hormonal changes are happening which can affect emotional responses. Changes to the body shape put pressure on lower back, hips, legs and feet. Sleep is often disrupted, with the addition nausea that can occur in some pregnancies. TCM treatments may assist in providing relief for these symptoms.

Menopause

Menopause is a natural phase for women, but for some the symptoms may be frustrating and can last 7 – 10 years. TCM treatment aims to reduce symptoms including night sweats, hot flushes, irritability, anxiety, memory fog, insomnia and fatigue.
